Part of OK Supermarket in Chinhoyi was damaged last week by explosives suspected to have been set by thieves who wanted to open the safe.

The thieves blew up the safe at the back of the shop with dynamite. Acting Mashonaland West police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Peter Zhanero confirmed the incident, saying investigations were in progress.

The incident occurred last week at around 4am when the suspects, who are still at large, detonated the explosives with the intention of blowing up the safe. The explosion triggered an alarm and a private security firm responded immediately.

The firm’s personnel went to get reinforcement at Chinhoyi Central Police Station and detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department before attending to the scene.

Police recovered five explosive cords. The safe was blown off the wall, which was extensively damaged.

The safe was still intact when police visited the scene of the explosion. Police were still to come up with the value of damages, said Asst Insp Zhanero.

Experts from the forensic laboratory have since attended to the scene while the inspector of mines is also expected at the scene to establish the type of explosives used.
