Jealous drove a Kwekwe woman who is in a polygamous marriage to burn the anal opening of a seven-day-old baby of the younger wife of her husband with a glowing piece of firewood.

The bizarre incident that arguably ranks as one of the worst known cases of crimes of passion happened last Saturday at Rycroft farm just outside the City of Kwekwe.

Witnesses said the accused woman was driven by jealous as her husband seemed to prefer the company of the victim’s mother.

“The man has three wives. The accused woman is the senior wife while the mother of the assaulted baby is the youngest and the polygamist’s favourite wife. It is because of the man’s love for the baby’s mother that the other woman got jealous and decided to vent her emotions on the innocent baby. She took advantage of the mother’s absence as she had gone to see a neighbour and friend next door,” said a witness who resides at the same farm.

The witness said the woman went about her normal household chores as if everything was normal soon after committing the offence. The matter only came to light when the mother returned and discovered her baby crying loudly prompting her to investigate.

A report of the matter was made to the police leading to the arrest of the woman on the same day. Meanwhile, the accused woman, Angeline Karimuziso (39) of Rycroft Farm in Kwekwe, appeared on Wednesday before Kwekwe Magistrate, Ms Florence Nago to answer charges of assault as defined in Section 89 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23. She was remanded in custody to 20 January.

Presenting the State’s case, Mrs Asiatu Mararanja said on 2 January, at around 6 am, the mother of the child, Ms Prisca Dube left her child sleeping in the kitchen while she went to a nearby homestead to see her young sister. The baby is a boy who at that time was seven days old.

Mrs Mararanja said the accused, Karimuziso, went into the kitchen, removed the baby's napkin and took a piece of glowing firewood and inserted it into the baby's anus.

The court heard that Ms Dube came back after a few minutes and met the accused near the gate where she was collecting firewood. Mrs Mararanja said Ms Dube heard her baby crying and rushed to the kitchen to attend to it. She said the mother breast-fed the baby but it continued crying.

After breast-feeding, Ms Dube removed the napkin and the baby still continued crying, the court heard. The mother opened the baby’s legs intending to apply some baby jelly and that is when she discovered that her baby had been assaulted with a hot object.

Mrs Mararanja told the court that the baby had some burns on his anal opening and he was referred to Kwekwe General Hospital for treatment.
She said the accused and the complainant (Ms Dube) were related in that they were married to the same man.
