Police in Gweru have impounded three vehicles belonging to former Chapungu, Dynamos and Warriors striker, Philip Marufu, on allegations of fraudulently importing the vehicles.

The police are allegedly saying that P. Marufu was using stolen emergency travel documents.

Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Patrick Chademana said the three vehicles, a Toyota Chariot, Nissan Sunny and a Honda, were with the police CID department.

“I can confirm that we have impounded the three cars belonging to Philip Marufu and the move is part of our investigations,” he said.

Inspector Chademana said he could not give more details regarding the case as this could jeopardise investigations. Sources close to the case, however, said the cars were impounded after the police investigations revealed that the cars were purchased using the proceeds realised from selling stolen ETDs.
The ETDs were allegedly stolen from the Midlands provincial registrar’s office in Gweru last September.

More than 10 500 ETDs went missing at the office in a scam that saw several officers at the provincial registrar’s office being arrested.

“Further investigations have revealed that Marufu’s cars were bought from the proceeds of the ETDs that went missing at the RG’s office,” said the source.
The source said police investigations have also revealed that the ETDs that were used to import the vehicles were among the stolen batch.

“All theses cars were imported from South Africa and the ETDs that were used during the importation had the serial numbers of the missing ETDs,” said the source.

The source said one of Marufu’s younger brothers, Trust Marufu was picked up at their house in Southdowns last week for questioning.

“It was during the questioning that the cars were found to have been fraudulently imported from South Africa using the forged ETDs,” he said.

When he left for the Democratic Republic of Congo, Marufu was on loan to Dynamos. He is now playing for FC Saint Eloi Lupopo based in Lubumbashi.
