Woman assaulted for falling pregnant

A Hwange woman was severely assaulted with clenched fists by her husband for falling pregnant, Sunday News can disclose.

Valentine Tonderai Emmanuel (26) of G39 B Lwendulu appeared before Hwange Magistrate, Mr Peter Tomupeyi Madiba for contravening Section 4 of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16, Physical Abuse.

He was fined US$100 or 20 days in prison. It is the state’s case that on 18 January this year at 7am Emmanuel forced the complainant, Ms Portia Ncube (18) out of the house after she told him that she was pregnant.

He is alleged to have questioned his wife why she was pregnant since he was using protection. A misunderstanding then ensued leading to Emmanuel assaulting his wife with clenched fists all over the body.

Ms Ncube reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of Emmanuel. She sustained serious injuries according to a medical report.

In his defence Emmanuel told the court that they always used condoms, so it was impossible for her to get pregnant.  In another incident a 51 year old Hwange man was sentenced to 70 hours community service for assaulting his wife.

Simon Muleya of 22 No 1 Village, Hwange appeared before the same magistrate for contravening Section 4 of the Domestic Violence Act. The prosecutor Mr Sifelumusa Fuzane told the court that on 7 February he left for a kitchen party in the company of his wife Ms Sihle Dlodlo (34) the (complainant).

They returned home late in the night together only for the complainant to sneak away at around 4am. The court further heard that the complainant returned in the morning the following day and the husband inquired on where she had been.

He is alleged to have slapped Ms Dlodlo all over the face several times leaving her with a swollen face. Ms Dlodlo then made a report to the police leading to the arrest of Muleya.

He pleaded guilty to the charges. Medical reports showed that the injuries sustained were serious.
